Waterford FC leapfrogged UCD in the First Division table thanks to a 2-0 win over the Students in Belfield.

Goals from Patrick McClean and Tom Smith were enough for the Blues as they dominated the Students.

Waterford had the better of the opening stages with Patrick McClean forcing a save out of Niall Corbet early on from Shane O'Connor's dangerous corner.

Davy McDaid should've put Alan Reynolds'side in front with fifteen minutes gone. He latched onto Ian McLoughlin's long ball, only to chip his effort straight into the hands of Niall Corbet having already beaten the keeper Jason McLelland went close in response from a free but the sides went in scoreless at the break.

Tom Smith was next to burst through for Waterford only for Corbet to smother his effort. The keeper was again called into action with an hour gone to make a spectacular stop from McDaid, but couldn't keep out McClean's header from the resulting corner. Reynolds' charges looked comfortable with the lead and the young UCD side couldn't break them down. Smith would counter forward on 82 minutes but couldn't keep his shot down from 18 yards. But he got a deserved goal three minutes later to kill the game, finishing into the bottom corner after great buildup in midfield.
