UCD’s fifth home win on the bounce maintains their two point lead at the top of the SSE Airtricity League First Division.

They were 3-1 winners over Cobh at Belfield on Friday night. The Students were the more clinical team, and the two goal difference didn’t tell the full story of the game. The first goal would have frustrated Stephen Henderson.

Gary O’Neill’s free-kick got through from forty yards, with Georgie Kelly wheeling away in celebration after getting the slightest of touches on the ball. A Ramblers defender should have got a touch to the ball.

The second was a bit more unlucky. O’Neill’s shot from thirty yards was pushed onto the crossbar, by Paul Hut but it fell perfectly for Kevin Coffey to slot home from three yards. The visitors hit the crossbar, through Cian Leonard, and the post, through Denzi Fernandez before the break.

UCD keeper Conor Kearns also pulled off a couple of a heroic stops, just after the half hour mark. It was helter skelter, as he saved from Anthony McAlavey, and then from David Hurley’s rebound, before putting his body on the line to prevent Andrew Wall’s effort hitting the net.

Hurley hit the crossbar again after the break, before Cobh finally got the goal their pressure deserved. McAlavey riffled home Hurley’s cross, to bring them back into the game. But the resurrection lasted all of six minutes, as Liam Scales rose highest to head home O’Neill’s corner. And with that, it was job done for Ian Ryan, who was filling in for the absent Collie O’Neill, who was away on work in the US.
