UCD closed the gap to Waterford FC at the top of the First Division table after a thrilling 3-2 victory.

The Students had the better of the opening stages, with Waterford unable to get the ball to their front two of Davy McDaid and Mark O'Sullivan as much as they'd want to.

13 minutes in, McLelland's strike took a major ricochet off Anthony McAlevey and flew past Matt Connor. Derek Daly went closest for the hosts to an equalizer before half time.

Five minutes into the second half, McLelland doubled his tally and UCD's lead. After being given too much space 25 yards out, McLelland fired into the bottom corner.

Despite pushing for a foothold back into the game, Waterford gave away a penalty with twenty minutes to go. Georgie Kelly nipped in ahead of Kenny Browne, with the defender clipping the heels of the youngster. Greg Sloggett converted.

Waterford weren't done though, as two quickfire goals in five minutes changed the game. First, McDaid's shot was helped over the line by Kenny McEvoy, before McDaid got on the scoresheet himself with a fantastic solo effort.

Despite wave after wave of pressure, UCD managed to hold on.
