Dundalk edged closer to the Premier Division title after a 1-0 win against Waterford FC.

Waterford FC started well and had a good chance after 12 minutes; Michael O’Connor got on the end of Tom Holland’s through ball but keeper Gary Rogers was out quick to make the block.

Sam Bone had another chance for Alan Reynolds’ side but he couldn’t get on the end of Georgie Poynton’s cross. Waterford went closer on the half hour; Zack Elbouzedi crossed from the left for Michael O’Connor who played the ball to Cory Galvin, but Chris Shields made a vital block to deflect the ball over the crossbar.

Michael Duffy had Dundalk’s first real chance but his effort was over Matthew Connor’s crossbar. But Dundalk did take the lead seven minutes before half time.

Referee Derek Tomney didn’t give the free kick to Rob Slevin as Pat Hoban stole possession on the touchline. The striker drove unchallenged at goal before squaring for Daniel Kelly to fire into the back of the net.

Dundalk almost doubled their lead just before the hour mark. Michael Duffy made progress down the left before passing inside to Daniel Kelly, but his strike was blocked in front of goal by Kevin Lynch.

Second half substitute Patrick McEleney forced Matthew Connor into a good low save from a powerful strike, before Waterford almost equalised at the other end.

Dean O’Halloran linked up with Walter Figueira inside the penalty area in the closing stages to find Shane Duggan but his right-footed shot was straight by Gary Rogers as Dundalk held out for the three points.
