Shamrock Rovers closed the gap to third-placed Waterford after a 1-0 win in the RSC against Alan Reynolds' side on Sunday.

Shamrock Rovers should have taken the lead inside three minutes; Roberto Lopes somehow fired wide from just six yards. Waterford had appeals for penalty turned down after 21 minutes.

Striker Courtney Duffus going down under the challenge of Roberto Lopes but referee Robert Harvey awarded a goal kick. Dylan Watts' powerful strike forced Waterford keeper Matthew Connor into a save before Ronan Finn’s follow-up forced Connor into a better second save to keep the game scoreless.

Courtney Duffus forced Rovers’ Alan Mannus into a good save on the stroke of half time. The Rovers keeper was called into action with two brilliant saves midway through the second half.

He kept out the low strike of Holohan before somehow keeping out Akinade’s follow up strike. Rovers were rewarded for those saves on 75 minutes. Substitutes Sam Bone and Gary Shaw linked up for Shaw to head beyond Blues keeper Connor for the three points.
