Waterford FC maintained their push towards the First Division title with a narrow 1-0 win at home to UCD on Friday night in the RSC.

UCD started strongest and Liam Scales headed over before Waterford FC had a chance of their own – Conor Whittle found Paul Keegan at the back post but his low strike came back off the post.

The game ebbed and flowed until Shane O’Connor gave Waterford FC the lead. Conor Whittle did well from the right and his cross found the diving header of Shane O’Connor before nestling in the back of the net.

Liam Scales headed over from Neil Farrugia’s corner kick, before Rob Manley tested Waterford keeper Matthew Connor but he saved well. Georgie Kelly almost levelled in the second half from Rob Manley’s superb cross but his powerful was brilliantly saved by Matthew Connor.

Second-half substitute Mark O’Sullivan almost made an instant impact when he got beyond UCD’s Liam Scales but he fired into the side netting. And as the game entered the final quarter, UCD’s Manley could have grabbed a levelling goal but his header from Timmy Molloy went just over Matthew Connor’s crossbar.

UCD pushed for an equaliser in the final minutes but they couldn’t find a way past a resolute Waterford defence.
