REPORT: Waterford 2-0 Sligo Rovers

Waterford FC continued their good recent run with a 2-0 win over Sligo Rovers at the RSC on Tuesday night. Goals either side of half time from Rory Feely and Walter Figueira secured the points for Alan Reynolds' side. Michael O’Connor and JJ Lunney

Waterford FC continued their good recent run with a 2-0 win over Sligo Rovers at the RSC on Tuesday night.

Goals either side of half time from Rory Feely and Walter Figueira secured the points for Alan Reynolds' side.

Michael O’Connor and JJ Lunney both had early chance before  the Blues had a golden chance to go in front from the penalty spot on 16 minutes; Walter Figueira was brought down by defender John Mahon but O’Connor’s penalty kick was saved by Luke McNicholas.

The home side continued to dominate but Georgie Poynton and Lunney were also kept out by the visiting keeper before Waterford FC hit the front after 34 minutes. 

JJ Lunney 's brilliantly whipped left-wing cross which found the run of captain Rory Feely, and he looped a header over McNicholas to make it 1-0.

The Blues doubled the lead after 52 minutes. Walter Figueira got possession on the right-side of the penalty area and after his first shot was blocked out, his second strike found the back of the net past Luke McNicholas with the aid of a deflection off Regan Donelon.

Sligo threatened at goal at the other end six minutes later but Blues keeper Matthew Connor produced a top save to turn a strike from Brian Morley over the bar. Sam Warde was then off target with a close-range header.

Shane Duggan had a great chance to add a third goal in injury time only but his close-range strike was well blocked.
