Waterford FC progressed to the quarter-final of the EA SPORTS Cup after a 2-1 win over Galway United at the RSC.
Dean Walsh had Waterford leading at the break before Jeff McGowan levelled before the hour mark, but it was Cory Galvin who won the game with an excellent strike beyond Galway keeper Werner.
Waterford started brightly and had a number of early chances. Dean Walsh’s header from Shane Griffin’s corner couldn’t find the target before Cory Galvin tried his luck after being set by John Martin but he was also off target.
Walsh was trying his luck again minutes later but Galway United keeper Andreas Werner saved well. For Galway United, Jeff McGowan went close midway through the first half Hugo Keto made a good save.
Waterford FC took the lead on 32 minutes when Shane Griffin’s inviting free kick found the run of Dean Walsh and he fired the opener. Galway finished the half brightly and Dara Costelloe went close when finding space down the left but he could only find the side netting from a tight angle.
Adam Rooney also went close from Colin Kelly’s curling corner but couldn’t direct it on target. Galway United made their pressure count with an equaliser on 59 minutes. Rory Feely’s backpass to keeper Hugo Keto was short and Jeff McGowan nipped in to round the keeper and level the tie.
Cory Galvin fired wide on the hour mark before he put Waterford back in front on 66 minutes. Regix Madika did well down the left before finding Galvin inside and he fired into the bottom corner just beyond the hand of Werner to make it 2-1.
Rory Feely rescued Waterford minutes later when a scramble in the penalty area saw Matthew Barrett strike but the defender got back on the line to clear. McGowan had a chance at one end while Madika had a chance at the other end; neither could find the back of the net. Neither team could add to their goal tally as the minutes ran out and Alan Reynolds’ side progressed.
