Waterford FC extended their lead at the top of the First Division table after a 2-1 win at home to Wexford FC.

The home side started the better and new loan signing Sean Heaney went close early on but Owen McCormack did well to deflect his effort clear. Wexford keeper Corey Chambers was forced to keep his side in the game with a couple of smart saves.

Chambers saved from John Martin before an even better save from Conor Whittle’s strike after a good Blues move. Garry Comerford went close for Waterford before Wexford took the lead against the run of play.

Great work from Andrew O'Connor saw him find Aaron Dobbs inside the Waterford area and he swept the balls across the face of the goal for Dean Kelly to fire home. Waterford started the second half on the front foot as David McDaid looked to strike but Corey Chambers saved well.

But they weren’t to be denied on the hour mark. Midfielder John Martin broke into the box from the right and was fouled by Wexford’s Ross Kenny and McDaid fired home from the penalty spot. And it got better for the home side on 67th minutes.

Derek Daly fired in the corner from the left and Mark O’Sullivan powered his header past Chambers to score the winning goal and give the home side a 2-1 win.
