Goals from David McDaid, Derek Daly and Dean Walsh secured all three points for Waterford FC after a 3-1 win at home to Athlone Town on Friday night at the RSC.

Waterford FC started brightly and David McDaid scored the opener after just 10 minutes. Kenny Browne played the through ball toward striker McDaid but Athlone keeper Igor Labuts came to clear. His clearance fell only to McDaid and he lobbed the ball home from 30 yards.

But just three minutes later Athlone Town were level. Ethan Keogh did well down the right before crossing to Dragos Sfrijan at the back post to fire the equaliser.

Waterford FC looked most likely to go in front again and they retook the lead nine minutes before half time. Shane O’Connor picked out Derek Daly 25 yards from goal and he powered an unstoppable drive past Labuts to make it 2-1 at half time.

The home side made it 3-1 on 67 minutes – Paul Keegan swung in the corner from the left, Kenny Browne saw his shot and header well saved but Dean Walsh was in the perfect position to head over the line for his second goal in two matches to ensure the three points.
