Waterford FC and Sligo Rovers had to settle for a share of the points after playing out a thrilling 3-3 draw in the RSC on Saturday.
Waterford had big shouts for a penalty turned down on 18 minutes when John Dunleavy tackled Izzy Akinade in the area but referee Anthony Buttimer waved play on.
Sligo Rovers hit the front on 18 minutes. David Cawley crossed for Kris Twardek and he fired past Waterford keeper Matthew Connor.
But Waterford hit back two minutes later; Cory Galvin firing low into the bottom corner from 20 yards to level.
Waterford then took the lead. Zack Elbouzedi crossing for Shane Duggan to shoot; his effort hitting the crossbar before striking the back of keeper Mitchell Beeney and finding the net.
Sligo Rovers levelled 11 minutes into the second half. Ronan Murray provided the pinpoint cross from the left and Ronan Coughlan equalised from inside the penalty area.
Rovers retook the lead on 64 minutes; Romeo Parkes latching onto Cawley’s excellent through ball before smashing the ball past Waterford keeper Connor.
Beeney then saved Shane Duggan’s penalty kick but persistence paid off for Waterford with an equaliser with 10 minutes to go; Akinade lobbing Beeney to level at 3-3.
Sligo could have snatched all three points with six minutes on the clock from the penalty spot after Poynton’s handball. Waterford keeper Matthew Connor had different ideas though as he made an excellent low save to deny Ronan Coughlan and the points were shared.
