Waterford FC moved nine points clear at the top of the First Division table with a 4-0 win at home to second-placed Cobh Ramblers at the RSC. Waterford started brightly with John Martin and David McDaid looking lively down their left, but neither player could pick out David McDaid in the Ramblers penalty area.

Waterford had strong appeals for a penalty turned down on the quarter hour – David McDaid looked like he was fouled in the penalty are but referee Damian MacGraith turned down the appeals and handed the striker a yellow card.

Cobh’s only chance of the opening 45 minutes came courtesy of Karl Caulfield, but his strike dropped over Matthew Connor’s crossbar. Waterford had the ball in the back of the net again as half-time approached, but after John Martin’s strike had been well saved by Wanderers keeper Paul Hunt, David McDaid was adjudged to be offside when he fired in the rebound.

Waterford broke the deadlock on 50 minutes. Shane O’Connor’s free kick from 30 yards evaded everybody and nestled in the back of the net. O’Connor doubled the lead on the hour mark – firing past Hunt after Heaney and Martin did well down the left.

David McDaid ensured the win with 77 minutes on the clock. Martin squared to McDaid and he fired home to make it 3-0. And the Blues ended the night with a fourth goal in stoppage time – Anthony McAlavey finding Dean Walsh to finish past Hunt.
