Cobh Ramblers got the win they needed to keep the pressure on leaders Waterford as they saw off Wexford FC 2-0 at Ferrycarrig Park.

The visitors took the lead on 21 minutes when Darren Murphy floated in a corner and James McSweeney steered a header beyond Corey Chambers.

They had gone close with just eight minutes on the clock when Darren Murphy's powerful effort came back off the upright, while Wexford almost made the breakthrough five minutes later but goalkeeper Paul Hunt tipped Mark Slater's curling free-kick on to the post.

Wexford suffered a severe blow when Slater was sent off seven minutes before the break although they did come close to grabbing an equaliser moments later, but Aaron Dobbs' header was just off target.

Corey Chambers, who was playing his final game before heading Stateside, was then called into action, pulling off a nimble save to deny Cian Leonard. Cobh struggled to enjoy the expected dominance after the interval, with ten-man Wexford giving as good as they got.

Substitute Ian Mylod did have a chance to wrap up the points shortly after entering the fray but Chambers did well to get an outstretched leg to his shot.

Wexford were then reduced to nine men when Shane Dunne was booked twice in the space of a minute and after Mylod had a shot saved by Chambers they finally wrapped up the points when Beneoin O'Brien Whitmarsh turned home Mylod's cross.
