Drogheda United made it four wins from four in the SSE Airtricity League First Division as first-half goals from Luke McNally and Jake Hyland saw them edge out Wexford FC 2-1 at Ferrycarrig Park.

Danny Furlong fired the hosts in front in the 15th minute with his fifth goal of the campaign. Jack Doherty did well to win the ball off Luke Gallagher, and he played a slide-rule pass to Furlong, who kept his cool to round the goalkeeper and slot the ball to the net.

Drogheda went in search of an instant response and Luke Gallagher forced a save from Corey Chambers after getting on the end of a Sean Brennan corner, while the follow up from James Clarke grazed the crossbar.

Brennan then drove forward with real purpose before firing a longe-range effort just over, and the pressure finally told in the 28th minute when goalkeeper Corey Chambers misjudged the flight of a Brennan free-kick from the right wing and Luke McNally had the routine task of finishing to the net from close range.

The visitors got their noses in front less than three minutes later when Conor Kane crossed to Jake Hyland and he confidently turned the ball to the corner of the net with his left foot. Five minutes into the second-half Drogheda's Chris Lyons had a sight of goal, but his glancing header from Hyland's cross was well off target.

After Drogheda substitute Jordan Adeyemo forced a save out of Chambers in the 65th minute, Wexford threatened seconds later when Jack Doherty did well before teeing up captain Chris Kenny, but his shot sailed wide of the right post.

The visitors became a little nervy late on as Wexford pressed for an equaliser and they had a scare in injury time when Danny Furlong blazed over after Chris Kenny's initial effort was blocked.
