Goals from Danny Furlong and Jack Doherty fired Wexford FC to a fully-deserved second win of their SSE Airtricity League First Division campaign in gale-force winds in Ferrycarrig Park. The breakthrough came when Paddy Cahill spread the ball out to

Wexford FC ended a frustrating season on a high as they saw off fellow strugglers Athlone Town in a First Division basement battle at Ferrycarrig Park.

Goals from Aaron Dobbs and Dean Walsh had the hosts 2-0 to the good at the break, although they were flattered by their two-goal cushion as the visitors showed plenty of attacking intent.

Athlone had marginally the better of it in the early stages and Ollie Hamzet warmed the gloves of goalkeeper Corey Chambers in the tenth minute, when he cut inside but his shot was comfortably held by the netminder at his near post.

However, Wexford FC hit the front in the 22nd minute when Adham Masood floated in a free-kick from the right and Dobbs got his head on it to direct it past Mick Fogarty for his seventh goal of the campaign.

Athlone Town should have drawn level ten minutes before the break. Aaron Brilly whipped in a cross from the right and, after Ollie Hamzet's initial effort came back off the crossbar, George Mukete headed over from close range.

The miss proved costly as Wexford doubled their advantage in the 44th minute. The alert Dean Walsh blocked down an attempted clearance from Fogarty and finished well from a tight angle to bag his first goal for the club since arriving on loan from Waterford United.

Wexford began the second-half brightly with Danny Doyle and Dobbs both getting shots on target but Athlone threatened again in the 56th minute when Hamzet's powerful angled shot was palmed away by Chambers.

The midlanders had a sight of goal again in the 70th minute when Aaron Brilly fizzed in a cross from the right but substitute Rory McCullough's effort from close in was blocked. The hosts then came close to extending their winning margin in the 86th minute when Liam McCartan curled a fine left-footed effort from 25 yards narrowly wide.
