A double from Thomas Croke lifted Wexford FC off of the foot of the First Division table for the first time since March.

The midfielder fired the Slaneysiders in front in the 12th minute, arrowing a beautifully-executed strike from just outside the area into the net after Dean Kelly's blocked shot fell into his path. Croke doubled the home side's advantage in the 32nd minute.

Craig McCabe's long throw was flicked on and the inrushing number six steered the ball beyond goalkeeper Mick Kelly. Cabinteely began the second half with real fire in their bellies, with Evan Galvin and Roy McGee both forcing saves out of goalkeeper Danny Bolger.

However, Wexford came within a lick of paint of putting the game to bed on 54 minutes when Dean Kelly's vicious, curling free-kick came back off the inside of the post.

Home goalkeeper Danny Bolger had to be alert to race off his line and snuff out a Kieran 'Marty' Waters effort on 65 minutes and the netminder was again called into action in the 84th minute when Ryan Swan went over in the area and Cabinteely were awarded a penalty.

Waters stepped up to take the spot-kick, but Bolger guessed right, getting down well to his right to save the shot.
