SSE Airtricity League First Division side Galway United have confirmed centre-back Adam Rooney has signed a new deal with the club.

The 18-year old defender had an impressive break-through season for the Tribesmen after making his first-team debut for the club in the EA SPORTS Cup against Sligo Rovers.

Rooney was part of the Ireland schools team who won the centenary shield during the 2018 season and manager Alan Murphy is excited about the prospect.

Another Galway United graduate who also played for the Irish schools team is current Rotherham United midfielder Ryan Manning, who is on loan from QPR, and Murphy believes he should follow that example.

“You just need to look at past Galway United players in Irish Schools teams. I’d go straight to Ryan Manning and look at the jump he made straight after being named Irish Schools Player of the Year," Murphy told galwayunitedfc.ie

“That’s exactly what Adam can do and I think he’s only working at half pace with regard to his development. He has huge potential and ability.

“It’s a big, big year for him in terms of nailing down a spot in the first team, really pushing on and becoming a leader at a young age.”
