Waterford were denied a historic victory at Oriel Park after a late fightback by Dundalk.

In the other Premier Division match this evening, Cork City secured an impressive 2-0 win over Sligo Rovers.

Dundalk 2-2 Waterford

Waterford were cruelly denied an impressive victory against Dundalk due to a late Lilywhite rally.

Matthew Smith put the Blues ahead with a well-worked goal as he turned inside and found the bottom corner in the 24th minute. Waterford doubled their lead just five minutes after the break as Michael O'Connor won the ball back high up the pitch and he found Kurtis Byrne who saw his powerful effort nestle in the bottom corner.

Dundalk were given a glimmer of hope in the 78th minute as Alistair Coote was sent off for a second bookable offence and the home side started to pile forward. Six minutes from time, Hoban headed home from a right-sided corner and in the final minute, Daniel Cleary's header somehow found it's way over the line.

Dundalk had a number of chances to win the game in injury time but Waterford held out to claim a point at Oriel Park.

Cork City 3-0 Sligo Rovers

Cork City lifted themselves off the bottom of the Premier Division with a fantastic victory over Sligo Rovers.

The Leesiders dominated from start to finish and Deshane Dalling's powerful low effort into the bottom corner put City ahead in the 35th minute.

With 15 minutes remaining, City secured the points as Kit Elliot scored from the spot on his debut to double the home side's lead.

In the final minute, the hero from the FAI Cup victory over Longford Ricardo Dinanga grabbed his second goal in as many games to wrap up the three points in style.
