Sligo Rovers manager Ger Lyttle says his squad will not be getting carried away after they picked up their first points of the season wit a 2-1 victory over Derry City at The Showgrounds on Friday night.

Second-half goals from Adam Morgan and Ally Roy were enough to see Rovers secure all three points, despite Ronan Curtis’ late consolation goal.

“The performance and result were really good. The boys were at it from the start after last week's disappointment. I thought we trained really well this week. Even in training I thought the tempo was excellent this week and we put things right after last week. It's good to get off the mark, everyone was getting a bit agitated and anxious.

"I'm delighted for the lads in the changing room. We're very pleased but it's only the second game of the season we're not going to be getting carried away just yet,” said the former Cliftonvillle manager.

Lyttle paid tribute to midfielder David Cawley who was instrumental in the Bit o’Red’s victory. Cawley returned to Rovers this season having previously donned the red and white jersey from 2012 until 2015.

“That's why we brought him here. He's a great player, he's a great lad in the changing room, he's got leadership qualities as well. I thought tonight in midfield he was excellent, he didn't put a foot wrong. I'm really pleased for him because I know it can be hard sometimes when you leave a club and you come back it can be a little doom and gloom and negative with some people but I thought tonight he was superb.

"I thought Eduardo in there was excellent with him. I could go through the whole team, Ally Roy was excellent and his pace and Adam Morgan kept going until he got his goal and that's the type of goal he preys on. I'm buzzing with it, it's word I don't like using, but I am. Hopefully we can get better and stronger as the games come to us. We're gelling in, it's a bedding in period. I thought tonight we all clicked.”

Former Liverpool player Morgan cut a frustrated figure at times during pre-season, but he will certainly be boosted after getting up and running on Friday night.

The Bit o’Red added to their squad during the week with Chelsea goalkeeper Mitchell Beeney joining on loan alongside Calum Waters who joins until June from Kilmarnock, while Patrick McClean also committed to Sligo Rovers for two years.

Both McClean and Beeney made their debuts on Friday night, a big call for manager Lyttle to make, but one he feels paid off with both contributing in impressive fashion to a critical victory for their new team.

“You're looking and thinking they've only had one day training session and it's a hard one but they fitted in really well. Patrick was really good and he's good in terms of leadership, and a lovely left foot and he can defend and he can attack and he gives us an option in the box in terms of his head. Big Mitchell was excellent, he pulled off a great save early doors , and that's given us a great lift. It's competition we wanted.”
