Title race heats up with huge Saturday ahead in the WPD!
Round 16 of the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division kicks off this Saturday with five games, after last week’s midweek action which saw Shelbourne edge Wexford 1-0 on Tuesday last week and Athlone Town claimed a 2-0 win against Peamount United.
League leaders Athlone Town travel to Tallaght Stadium to face Shamrock Rovers again, having faced them in the Club Orange Women’s FAI Cup Quarter-Finals, days after booking their place in the Final.
The Champions edged Galway United 4-3 on penalties in Saturday’s Semi-Final following a 1-1 draw at Athlone Town Stadium and will face Shelbourne, who were 6-0 winners over Cork City in the other Semi-Final. They meet in the decider at Tallaght Stadium on Sunday 27 September, with kick-off set for 15:30.
Athlone Town arrive in Tallaght having won their last five League games and sit three points ahead of Shelbourne, having played a game fewer.
Galway United return to home base at Eamonn Deacy Park this weekend and face the visit of Cork City, both sides will be looking to respond on the League front having suffered Semi-Final exits in the Cup. Phil Trill’s side remain third in the League, seven points behind leaders Athlone Town albeit with a game in hand.
Emma Doherty scored a hattrick in the reverse fixture at the Cross in April while Cork City have lost their last six.
Treaty United host a Bohemians side at the Markets Field who won there in June, with Savannah Kane’s goal knocking the home side out of the Women’s All-Island Cup, Kane was on the scoresheet again in the previous Saturday’s North Dublin Derby.
Sligo Rovers welcome Waterford after their 10-game unbeaten run came to an end following a 3-2 loss to Athlone Town. The Bit O’ Red have won four out of their seven home League games this season and have beaten the visitors twice this season, while the Blues remain winless in 11.
DLR Waves host Peamount United at the UCD Bowl with just three points between the sides, the Waves claimed their first away win of the season last time out against Cork City while Peamount United have lost their last three in the League.
