Galway United drew 0-0 against Longford Town as both sides earned a point at Eamonn Deacy Park.

Galway had the best early chance in the 10th minute through Eoin McCormack after Ryan Connolly dinked a lovely ball in over the top but he could only miscue in the box.

The visitors looked dangerous through playmaker Aodh Dervin – but it was Karl Chambers who tested the United rear-guard with a 32nd minute shot that flew wide.

Sam Verdon and Evan Galvin also had shots at goal in the opening half, but it was Danny Furlong with the best chance when he swivelled inside the box to test Mick Kelly just before half time.

Following the re-start, Chris Mulhall had the opportunity to break the deadlock with a half-chance inside the United box, but his toe-poked effort at the back post dragged wide.

Following that, there was a seven-minute stoppage in play when one of the floodlights failed, but referee Damien MacGraith ultimately opted to play on.

Mulhall had a half-chance minutes later, but Tadhg Ryan did well to come out and smother in a one-on-one. In the closing stages, Furlong had a brilliant opportunity to steal maximum points with a half-volley from a tight angle at the back post that flew millimetres wide of the mark.

A lively encounter between two sides hungry for promotion – but a share of the spoils on the night.
