Former Cork City midfielder Colin Healy announced his retirement from the game yesterday to draw close on a fine career.

Tributes poured in on social media from the football world as Healy announced the end of his 19-year career which saw him make 13 appearances for the Republic of Ireland national team.

The former Celtic and Sunderland midfielder had two spells with Cork City, making 172 appearances for the club and scored seven goals, having had many wonderful moments in a City shirt, an overhead kick against St. Patrick's Athletic in 2014 arguably his finest League of Ireland moment.

Cork City boss John Caulfield led the tributes: "Since myself and John Cotter came into the club, Colin was a huge player, both on and off the pitch.

"The fact that Colin had played at the highest level during his career shone through, and the good habits and total professionalism he had were a huge help to us in driving the club forward.

"Colin was always on hand for the younger players, in training, in matches and so on, to give them advice and help bring them through."

A number of current and former players from across the SSE Airtricity League were quick to pay tribute to Healy after announcing his retirement...
