Waterford FC picked up their first three points of the 2017 SSE Airtricity League First Division season on Friday night with a 3-0 win against Cabinteely at the RSC.
David McDaid had the home side in front after just the 4th minute, before Anthony McAlavey fired into the top corner to double the lead before the break. McDaid then added a second after half time with a clinical finish as the Blues ran out comfortable winners.
Waterford FC assistant first-team coach, John Frost, was thrilled to get the win.
“We’re delighted to get the three points. It was a good professional performance and we’re up and running now. It was a great start for us [scoring after just 4 minutes]. But then Cabinteely had a few chances themselves, but we weathered the storm, and then went and got a second.
“And still at 2-0, we had to go and get a third just to seal the victory. I thought we could have gone on and maybe put them to the sword after that but we failed to do so, so it’s something we can work on, but definitely a happy night’s work.
Anthony McAlavey, one of only a few familiar faces at the RSC from last season’s squad, was on hand to fire in the second goal, before McDaid fired a third goal.
“We were delighted when Anthony McAlavey made it 2-0. As we grew into the game, you could see that we really got playing. We know that’s in the team and they want to do well for the club. We played in patches so the thing it now to play for 90 minutes.
“The third goal, Davy’s second goal, was fantastic. Davy was brilliant, and with Mark O’Sullivan beside him, they worked really well together. It was great to see the connection that they had playing together. And that’s what it’s all about with the top two there, making a relationship for themselves and getting us the goals. But it was great to see Davy get the goals and settle in nicely.”
Former Blues favourite Dave Mulcahy has returned to the club this season, and Frost was delighted with the contribution of the Blues captain.
“It’s great to have Dave Mulcahy back. He’s been a great servant to the league, and his organisational skills at the back were fantastic for us tonight. His experience and everything he brought to the game really settles us down when we had to weather those periods of Cabinteely pressure and just to calm everybody down and push everybody forward.
Waterford now look to next week’s match away to UCD. Frost knows it won’t be an easy tie:
“UCD are always great footballing opponents. They always push to get promoted and they’ll always be there or thereabouts and we’ll have to have our wits about us when we go there.”
