Longford Town manager Neale Fenn was just happy to get the job done after watching his side grab two late goals to eke out a 2-1 victory over Wexford FC at Ferrycarrig Park on Friday evening. The visitors looked up against it at the break, with Danny Furlong giving Wexford a first-half lead, but they improved after the change of ends, with late goals from Sam Verdon and Peter Hopkins earning a precious three points. “It was tough. I don't think we started the game very well but full credit to Wexford. They sat in and hit us on the break and showed good quality and good passing to carve us open for the first goal. "We went in behind at half-time and the boys knew it wasn't good enough. They didn't need me to tell them that it needs to be better. We came out in the second-half and we were much better,” said Fenn. Town cranked up the pressure on the home defence as the game wore on and their persistence finally paid off with Verdon's opener in the 77th minute, followed by Hopkins' winner with five minutes remaining, but Fenn admitted he thought the goals might never come. “It was one of those days where it looked like it was never going to go in for us but we got the goals in the end. Full credit to the boys, they showed a bit of quality at times with some balls into the box and fortunately we got the two goals. "You do feel for Wexford though. I know Brian (O'Sullivan) very well. Little things go against you when you're near the bottom," he said. The three points moved the midlanders to the top of the table, but Fenn isn't getting carried away at this fledgling stage of the season and he's well aware that there's a long and unpredictable road ahead, although he was delighted with the character his players displayed in trying circumstances. “It puts us top of the table and we're unbeaten still. Obviously at times it looked like we weren't going to get the win tonight, but we worked hard. That's the first time we've been behind this season and we showed good character. "We're not looking too far ahead. We know what we've got to do, try to win every game. We know its difficult, which is why you have to dig in and try and grind results out when you can,” he said. The ultimate goal is promotion back to the top flight, but Fenn knows it's not going to be easy, with a handful of clubs eyeing the same goal. “Promotion is what the club wants. The club are geared up for promotion but it's one thing wanting it and it's another thing actually going and doing it. We know the first-half tonight wasn't acceptable and we have to be much better than that, but the second-half was much better and that's more like us,” he said. Peter Hopkins scored the all important winner as De Town came back from behind to win 2-1 at Ferrycarrig.
