Pat Devlin says that Cabinteely can challenge for the First Division title next season, if he can keep the bulk of his squad together. They beat Athlone 6-2 in their final home game of the season on Friday night, to put themselves in pole position to claim 4th spot in the table. “I think it’s great progress, what we’ve achieved this season.” “But we still have to finish the job against Shelbourne in a couple of weeks.” Fourth would undoubtedly be a step in the right direction for the Kilbogget Park club, who finished eighth and seventh in their first two season in the league. “But I still think we can do better,” continues Devlin, “and keeping the group together is crucial. If we can do that, and add players, who knows what we can achieve?” One player who is sure to attract attention is Marty Waters. He scored a hat-trick on Friday night to move himself ahead of UCD’s Georgie Kelly, and to the top of the scoring chart in the First Division. The striker says he’s happy where he is. “It’s great to finish at home on such a high” “With the vision the club has, we could be second to none.” “And that’s with me included.” Waters says the “silly season” is in full swing, and that people will talk, but that he sees himself at Cabinteely for the foreseeable future. “I’m an important cog in this team, and it would be difficult for me to leave.” “But like anyone else, I’ll have a think about where I’m at once the season is over.” Devlin has built a great squad this season at Cabinteely, with another of the newcomers, Ryan Swan, getting in on the scoring act on Friday night. If they’re all playing their football at Stradbrook next season, then Cabo will almost certainly have a say in the destination of the 2018 SSE Airtricity League First Division.
