Drogheda United midfielder Jake Hyland believes his side fully deserved all three points as Drogheda defeated St Patrick’s Athletic 2-0 at United Park.

The result makes it two wins on the bounce for the newly promoted Drogs and goal scorer Hyland feels the score line was flattering on the Saints.

“It’s exactly the start that we wanted,” Hyland acknowledged post-match. “I think last week we rode our luck a little bit in Galway but tonight was a different story. We dominated the game from start to finish and the second goal was the icing on the cake.

“We limited their chances and eventually took one of our own. We were clinical last week where as tonight we easily could’ve scored three or four."

The 21-year-old broke the deadlock midway through the second-half as he collected Gavin Brennan’s pass before slotting the ball into the bottom corner and he is aware that there is stiff competition for places in Pete Mahon’s side.

“I need to add goals to my game this year as I’m playing slightly more advanced,” he continued. “There’s some serious competition for starting places in the squad so I’ve got to be on my game every week to be in the team.“

Drogheda’s 100% start to the season will come under considerable threat next week when they host Cork City though Hyland is adamant that his team-mates will keep their feet on the ground regardless of the result.

“Our target is definitely to avoid relegation. With the three teams going down it’s going to make for a very competitive league at either end of the table.

“As you can see tonight, we’re quite a fit side and in both games this season we’ve been the ones pressing hard at the end for the goals. I don’t think anyone wants to play us at United Park so it’s up to us to make it a fortress.”
