Disappointment was etched on the face of captain Chris Kenny after Wexford FC suffered a narrow defeat to promotion-chasing Drogheda United at Ferrycarrig Park on Friday evening. It was the third 2-1 reverse in a row for the Slaneysiders and losing by a small margin seems to have become an unwanted habit for Brian O'Sullivan's men. Danny Furlong fired the hosts in front in the 15th minute, but Drogheda struck back with two goals in three minutes either side of the half hour mark from Luke McNally and Jake Hyland to earn the points, and Kenny was struggling to get his head around their Groundhog Day. “It was the same story again. We went 1-0 up and then conceded two sloppy goals. The problem is we're not stopping crosses from the wide areas and we're not defending them when they come into the box. It's something we need to work on because it's happening week in and week out. Hopefully next week we can avoid it,” he said. After going in front, conceding two goals in quick succession was a real sucker-punch for Wexford, who remain rooted to the foot of the table, but they refused to throw the towel in and kept fighting for every ball until what was ultimately the bitter end. They may have had nothing to show for their efforts again, but Kenny says they're not far away and if they keep working on things and lady luck shines on them the points will eventually come. “It kind of knocked the wind out of our sails for a while. I'm saying this every week but it is improving. You can see small steps that we're taking to improve but we need the rub of the green. We had a couple of chances to get a draw.  "I had one, it flashed just wide of the post, and Danny Furlong had one near the end as well. We just need that small bit of luck to get over the line and get a few points on the board because we're finding it hard at the moment.  "We keep getting beaten 2-1 so we're not that far away but it's the same story every week and it has to start improving,” he said. There was definitely nothing amiss with the attitude of the Wexford players as they gave it their all to try to rescue something from the game and Kenny admitted that sometimes footballing philosophies have to be put to one side in favour of a more agricultural approach as a means to an end. “We were on top in the second-half. Maybe it wasn't the prettiest football game in the world. We were more direct than we normally are but needs must and we nearly got something out of the game.  "If that's what you have to do, that's what you're going to have to do. For our hard work we're looking for a bit of reward and at the moment we're just not getting any,” he said.
