Drogheda United manager Tim Clancy believes his side were full value for their 2-1 win over Wexford as they secured three points in dramatic fashion at United Park. Mark Doyle struck a stoppage time winner for the Boynesiders against the 10-man visitors with Clancy delighted that his players’ determination was rewarded at the death. “I told the lads that they earned that win,” the Trim native explained post-match. “To win the match with a minute to go brings a lot of relief and celebrations but I think we would’ve been devastated had it been a draw. "We started off on the front foot but rather than get the second goal, we gave away a cheap equaliser. It was a real battle out there tonight but the players never gave in.” Despite his strike partner being the one to get the headlines, Clancy was quick to highlight the performance of Chris Lyons who returned to the side from injury. “His hamstring had been troubling him for the past fortnight so it was great to have him back this evening. It’s a superb turn and cross for the opener but he’s a player who never hides. “We did a bit of homework on the Wexford centre-halves and we noticed that they love a battle with a big physical striker and that they might struggle with a bright, nippy forward like Chris and so it proved.” Following a rocky start to the season, including a humbling 4-1 defeat at home to Cabinteely, Drogheda have now recorded successive wins as they lie fourth in the table with Clancy eager to continue their run of form away to Athlone Town next week. “We asked the players for a big response after the Cabinteely defeat and that’s exactly what we got. It feels like we finally have a bit of momentum this season and hopefully we’ll carry it into the Athlone game.”
