Wexford FC's Craig McCabe cut a frustrated figure after the 2-2 draw with Athlone Town in the SSE Airtricity League First Division at Ferrycarrig Park on Friday evening.

Although the struggling Slaneysiders added another point to their tally the captain felt that they let a good opportunity to plunder all three points slip through their fingers.

“I think we should have picked up the three points. We just need a little bit of luck really. Even the chance for Liam (Donnelly), these little things aren't just going our way. It was brilliant free-kick by Mark Slater and on another day Liam would have turned it in, but we just need the rub of the green,” said the defender.

After changing ends trailing 2-1, the hosts came out with the bit between their teeth after the interval with the impressive Mark Slater levelling within a minute of the re-start, and McCabe believes they had a good opportunity to win it from there.

“We were lively in the second-half and created chances. They changed formation and went three at the back, so it gave our full-backs more time to get on the ball and try to find the feet of the lads up front, but we're still missing a bit of end product,” he said.

It has been a trying week for Wexford FC, with inspirational leader Graham Doyle having to call it a day after succumbing to injury, bringing to an end a distinguished career with the south east club.

McCabe has taken over the mantle as captain and he was full of praise for his predecessor.

“What can you say about that fella? He's an absolute legend, a leader on the field as well as off. He'll be a massive loss inside the dressing room as well as on the field,” he said.
