Scoring an important winning goal is always a feather in any player's cap. For a young striker paving his way in the game, you'd imagine it would be all the sweeter.
However, garnering the points was the be all and end all for a modest Matthew Whelan, who was just happy to have helped his side to plunder the riches on offer.
“It's not a bad feeling to get the winner alright. After the journey up here it's nice to come away with the three points, that's the main thing never mind the goal,” he said.
The 19-year-old admitted that while the visitors were good at times they didn't have it all their own way against the Slaneysiders, and was relieved to hear the shrill of the final whistle.
“It was a very tough battle. We had to dog it out. It was an ugly three points, but it was a good three points for us,” he said.
Whelan headed home the winner, after Ramblers had recovered from falling behind to an Adam Hanlon goal, with James McSweeney grabbing the equaliser just seven minutes after Wexford's opener.
Ramblers have their sights firmly on Waterford FC at the top of the First Division table and Whelan believes his side can continue to kick on in their promotion push.
“We had a bad pre-season, but it was the exact same as last year and we went on a great run. We're doing really well now. We're up near the top of the table, we were three points off Waterford before the game so it's all about getting the win to keep in touch with them.
Hopefully the rest of the season goes well and we can keep knuckling down and winning games,” he said.
